HILLSDALE B3 + B4
Hillsdale B3 and B4 are both part of the Barry Farm redevelopment, a historic site with deep ties to Black heritage, dating back to the Reconstruction Era when free and formerly enslaved African Americans established a community on land secured by the Freedmen’s Bureau. Situated near the Southeast Freeway, Suitland Parkway, and St. Elizabeths West Campus, Barry Farm is undergoing a transformation under the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Planning’s New Communities Initiative.
Hillsdale B3 marks our third collaboration with the Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH). Designed in harmony with the new development, B3 embraces bold colors and playful forms, reflecting the energy of a younger demographic within the community. In contrast, Hillsdale B4 draws inspiration from the mid-century vernacular of the site’s historic townhomes, blending modernity with tradition. Partnering with Hickok Cole Architects, we weave contemporary forms with a neutral, enduring palette—bridging past and future in a way that honors Barry Farm’s legacy while ushering in its next chapter.
