point of action

Type: installation

Completion: 2020

Location: new york, ny

In partnership with Cooke John Studio, Point of Action is a public art installation that inspires heightened awareness of the body’s own conception of space and time through movement and contemplation.

Point of Action invites passersby in New York's Flatiron District to reflect upon the experience of seeing one another—and being seen, allowing for a socially distanced engagement. As the viewer steps into the installation’s threshold, there are multiple opportunities for interaction with others. Six-foot circles affixed onto the Flatiron Public Plazas create nine “spotlights,” each with its own vertical metal frame. Ropes weave through each frame and part, like a figurative curtain, pulled aside, making room for the viewer to stand in the spotlight; connect with other viewers across the Plazas; and maneuver in and out and between the different capsules.

Our intervention was primarily in a lighting capacity. A luminous halo above each circle accentuates the framing; linear lights embedded into the sides of each frame emphasize volume and dimensionality.
